James Cameron

James Cameron (1817 - 1882) was active/lived in Tennessee, Pennsylvania / Scotland.  James Cameron is known for Landscape and portrait painting.

A portrait and landscape painter, James Cameron is thought to have come to America before 1839.  He first settled in Indianapolis.  About 1848, he may have been in Rome, Italy to study art, and by 1949 was in Philadelphia where he married Emma Cameron, an artist. 

He continued living in Philadelphia for a short period of time, residing with his wife and mother and having property that was valued at $11,500.

In 1850, he moved to Tennessee, living first in Nashville and then in Chattanooga where he set up a studio doing portraits and landscapes.

However, the Civil War drove him away from the state, and in 1863 he left.  Returning fter the war, he was so discouraged by the devastation that he moved to Oakland, California in 1870, where he became a minister and abandoned painting.

Exhibition venues include the American Art Union* in 1848, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts* in 1859 and 1851.
